Questions

Why is my take-home pay so much less than my salary?

Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), and state tax if your state has one all come out before you’re paid, plus anything you choose like a 401(k) or health insurance.

If I get a raise into a higher tax bracket, will I take home less?

No. Only the dollars above the bracket line are taxed at the higher rate. Every raise means more take-home pay.

Should I put money in my 401(k) if I’m just starting out?

If your employer matches, put in at least enough to get the full match. It’s free money, and it lowers your income tax now.
